Faith Like Mustard Pants: Trying New Trends While At Home

Kathryn / We’ve all been doing our best to stay home and social distance for many months now, and it doesn’t look like that will be changing any time soon. While that might be a reason to don your sweatpants or stay in your pajamas all day (I know it is for me about 70% of the time), I also think it provides a great opportunity to try new trends that we might not be inclined to try during “normal” times. My time staying in has really pushed me to the edge of my fashion comfort zone and beyond, because it’s such a safe environment to experiment. Just because people won’t be able to see our outfits in person doesn’t mean we can’t show them off on our instagram, blog, zoom calls, or honestly just for myself. I’ve found that getting dressed in a good outfit really elevates my mood for the entire day, even though I’ve got nowhere to go. Here are a few of the trends we’ve tried this summer—maybe you’ve tried them too, or we will inspire you!

This Summer’s Hottest New Accessory: Fashionable Masks

Kathryn / If you’re going out in public, a mask is a must. It’s the right thing to do to keep your community and yourself safe. Honestly, bring it on, because there are so many possibilities to complete your outfit with a cute mask! Our favorite cloth masks were handmade by my cousin—there are so many mask options on Etsy these days, and you won’t have a problem finding something that is your style. I also found these mask/headband sets the even have buttons on the headband so you don’t have to strain your ears while wearing the mask! No matter what kind of mask you choose, make sure you’re following CDC guidelines and not leaving your house without one!

Faith Like Mustard Pants: Wide Leg Cropped Pants

Kathryn / I will tell you, I would never put these mustard yellow pants on of my own accord. But Summer bought them for me so I promised her I’d try them on and give them a fair shot. When I first put them on I was convinced I’d be returning them, but then I wore them for about an hour and that’s all it took to totally sell me. Wide leg crop pants, here I come. This fat babe has faith like a mustard seed in her best friend to find me new trends that I can DEFINITELY pull off 🔥🔥

Summer / After suggesting she try them numerous times, I knew Kathryn would never try wide leg crops unless I bought them for her. So I took matters into my own hands and sent her these pants, then made her wear them for the day so we could do a side-by-side photo for Insta. My efforts paid off because once she had to wear them for more than five minutes she realized they’re actually pretty great. I try to push Kat out of her comfort zone when I know something will look good on her (see: the black dress she wore to my engagement party that I got her for Christmas). If you have a friend who is stuck in a fashion rut, try sending them something you think will look nice; even if they hate it, the thought you put into it will still brighten their day.

Zenon Meets Princess Di: Iridescent Bike Shorts

Summer / Way back when I thought we’d still get to celebrate Kathryn’s birthday together (for the first time EVER) I decided the theme would be iridescent everything. I scoped out some iridescent clothing options but nothing was really speaking to me. Then I found these bike shorts at American Eagle. Since bike shorts are super trendy, not to mention they remind me of Princess Di, I thought these would be a good foray into that fit while going with the birthday theme.

Kathryn / I was so excited when I got this package. I got it about a month after my actual birthday and it was such a nice surprise that really made my day (so much so that I made a TikTok about it). Bike shorts have exploded recently, so I was super excited to get a pair that was lovingly selected by my best friend that goes against the grain a bit! These shorts are so fun and we’ve been wearing them all summer long. This pair is unfortunately out of stock at AE (here is a dupe I found from Shein, but sizing is limited), but we do encourage you to find some fun floral patterns or bright colors to try out!

That 70’s Look: Flare Jeans

Summer / 70’s fashion is my kind of fashion; I love wide-legged pants, long hair, and peasant tops. These flares come in extra-long which means I can wear them with wedges and they make my legs go on for miles. Something about that combo just makes me feel so cool, it’s a real casual power outfit. It doesn’t hurt that my fiancé told me he liked this outfit when I wore it and he hardly ever mentions what I’m wearing unless I’m really dressed up. Like the wide leg crops, I had to talk Kathryn into trying this trend—she just isn’t into voluminous pants—but once she got them on they looked so cute. This wash isn’t really her vibe, though, so we’re going to try a darker wash and slightly more fitted leg like my flares to ease her into the fit.

Kathryn / The darker wash, more fitted flares were from Old Navy and closer to something I’d be comfortable wearing more often. (However, I did miss the drama of a more wide flare—maybe they really are starting to grow on me!) Ultimately I returned them because they were too tight in the waist, but now I’m on the lookout for a better pair of flares for fall.

Clogs for the Blog

Summer / I am here for the block heel trend, so much better than skinny stilettos on my bad ankles, so the natural progression of that is clogs! Again, these totally vibe with my beloved 70’s style, and have plenty of support without sacrificing height. Of course I got a mustard yellow pair, because that is my favorite this season, but I’m also tempted to grab a more neutral clog. I can get away with sneaking these under some long pants for work, and they’re super fun for going out (if we ever get to do that again!)

One Piece, Two Piece, Red Piece, Blue Piece

Kathryn / TWO PIECE SETS! I have started seeing these everywhere this summer, and I’m so here for them. Seeing as we are a very matchy-matchy pair of friends, it only makes sense that we would be drawn to matching two-piece sets. The best part of them is that you can take both the top and bottom and pair them with other tops and bottoms—each piece is truly so versatile! Unfortunately, I’ve found the plus size options for two piece sets to be pretty limited unless you’re willing to drop some serious cash for a boutique or designer one. Being all about affordable fashion, I wasn’t willing to do that, and I’m still on the hunt for something great. (If you find anything, shoot us a DM!)

Lounge Sets “Tie-Dye” For

Summer / Since quarantine and then learning I will be teaching remotely this fall, loungewear has become my life. Kathryn tried and tried to convince me to tie dye our own sets, but I couldn’t find any white sets I liked that would work for that. Thankfully, we compromised and decided to try these already tie-dyed sets. The dolphin shorts are great for summer, and the cut is (once again) a total throwback vibe. I feel like a cropped top makes it look a little bit more like an intentional outfit than your basic comfy clothes.

Kathryn / Have you tried any of these trends? Are there any trends you’ve tried that aren’t on this list? We’d love to know all about them! Comment below or message us on instagram.
